ELECTRIC LIGHTING
A SUMNER PROPOSAL,
A meeting of members of the Sumner Burgesses' Association and other
residents was held in the Municipal Buildings on Saturday evening, when Mr H. Buttle presided over a good attendance.
Correspondence was received from Mr F. Fitzhenry in connexion with the necessity of installing electric light in Sumner."
Mr Fitzhenry, who was present, stated that he was now a prospective resident, but was surprised that there was little chance of' getting electricity in Sumner until after the war. Electricity would help to popularise the place, and would be the means of a number of people building and residing there. He had _ taken a petition round, and had received a number of signatures in favour of electricity. The present pas plant need not be scrapped, and would still be essential to the borough. The City Council was prepared to reticulate the remainder of the borough, and he understood they could supply the current at city rates, which were considerably below those charged in Itedcliffs.
Mr Diamond supported the remarks made by the previous speaker, and said that the residents were enthusiastically in favour of the proposal, and the whole subject should be fully ciiscussed at a public meeting. the Mayor (the Hon. John Barr), in replying, carefully outlined the history of the present existing scheme He had interviewed the officers of the Citv Council and the Public Works Departthought the borough would better treatment by dealing direct with the producer.
