SPORTING.

» ! racing and trotting NOTES. (By ' Lookep.-Onv') There was plenty of good galloping crovml available at Riccarton on Satuidav. the insido of the trial grass bejntr open., in addition to the plough and tan tracks. Tho best gallop of the morning was registered by Disdainful and Wardancer, who" put "up good time for a mile. Disdainful showed improved form and finished with her head in front. Comely was seen at her best over seven furlongs, and had no difficulty in beating Harlequin, who was to have brought her home. Afterelow showed plenty of speed, but Majestikoff had her measure at the end of half a mile. Eleus was going on better than Kilalla at the iinish of a half-mile sprint, after being outpaced in the early part. Battle Eve was seen to advantage in beating Ascalaphus ovor about a mile, and he seems"to bo coming back to form. Bramblety-e did a strong mile, without being quite at top, and Margerino was given useful work. Longley gave the two-year-old fiHv, Starlike, a sprint, in which she hit out freely. The Treadmill mare. Blockade, who j has not raced Tot, showed decent form in a sprint with Sir Fanciful. Finland Maid went well over the last fivo of six furlongs with Carol Singer, who showed signs of lameness. Jeannot was scarcely tip to his best form in a seven furlong gallop, and was easily beaten by Tyne, who assisted him over the last part of the journey. . j The imported horse, Gay Lad, did a useful half-mile sprint, and looks as if he would pay his way. I McAulay sent Jingo six furlongs, in J which he went fairly well, while Daytime and Ivilrush did shorter sprints. Subterfuge was stopping at the end of a six-furlong gallop. She was joined in tho run homo by tho two-year-old by Boniform —Signal, who showed a fair turn of speed. Donnata dashed over half a mile on the plough in her usual free stylo. Tho brother to Birkline, who has been named Winslow, sprinted half a mile with Bondage, and looks like being useful. "Wrestler was given steady pacing, j and got through his work in very sedato fashion. Long Range was on the scene again, and moved along freely in a brush down the straight. Marc Anthony is to bo turned out for a long spoil. He blew a lot after doing half-pace work on Thursday, and ifc is thought that he strained Himself in his recent escapade when swimming near liedcliffs. Mr D. H. Roberts has sent three more horses to F. Christmas to train. They are a two-year-old sister to Fiery Cross, by Glenapp—Red Cross; a four-year-old gelding by Glenapp from an unnamed mare by Son of a Gun —Sally, a sister to Orloff; and a two-year-old filly by Glenapp, from a mare by Son of a Gun. Acceptances for the Nelson Jockey Club's Annual Meeting close this evening. Tha defeat of Desert Gold in tho Caulfield Futurity Stakes on Saturday, though disappointing to her admirers, was no disgrace to. her,' seeing that she was carrying a penalty of lolb, while the winner. Wedge, l.ad escaped a penalty. The course no doubt had been affected by tho rain overnight, and it has been proved in New -Zealand that Mr Lowry's brilliant mare is not seen at her best in heavy going. Wedge won three races last year, of no great value, but he showed himself a useful sprinter, and at the beginning of the present season ran second in the Epsom Handicap at Randwick, being beaten by Satin Bird by a very small margin. Desert Gold earned a useful sum by running second, but for her late entrance Mr Lowry had to pay a fee of 50 sovs. Desert Gold's next engagement is. in the Essendon Stakes, at the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting, 9pening at Flemington. This is a weight-for-age event, run over a mile and a quarter. She also figures in the C.M. Lloyd Stakes, one mile, and Governor's Plate, one mile and a half, on the third day, Thursday, March 7th, and the King's Plate, two miles, on the concluding day, Saturday, March 9 th. The surprise of Saturday's racing at Wanganui was Estland's defeat of Biplane in the Wanganui Guineas. The latter's win in the Jackson Stakes on Thursday suggested that he had retained his form in spite of the interruption in his work, but his display on Saturday indicated that he was unable to see out a solid mile. Estland's form this season makes him out a three-year-old of good class, and it is to be hoped that he and Biplane will meet again later in the autumn. Estland is a brother to Bjorneborg, who won the Wanganui Guineas for Mr Lowry last season, both being by Finland from War scare. (Br "Seabchlight.") The annual meeting of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association will be held on Wednesday next, at 8 p.m., in Mr C. W. Hervey's rooms, Cathedral square. A. Pringle and J. Bryce returned from Wellington yesterday, after their unsuccessful trip to the Wanganui Trotting Club's Annual Meeting. The five-year-old Harold Dillon mare Plain Rose, who ran second to Marinoto in the Maiden Handicap, has been taken over by H. Barraclough, to be prepared for future engagements. .Annie K., the Southland-owned, trotting mare, is now sheltered at Oakhampton Lodge. The Ashburton trainer, A. Pringle, intends to shortly take in hand Lady Haldane again, and endeavour to win a race with tho disappointing daughter of Lord Chancellor. ° Little Hector, an unsuccessful competitor in the Wanganui Trotting Cup, did not return to J. Bryce's stabfe but was returned to her owner at Hawera. V.A.T.C. AUTUMN MEETING DESERT GOI/D BEATEN.
