* His Excellency the Governor-Genoral will go noith to Wellington to-morrow-evening, returning to Christchurch on Thursday morning.
Mr Justice Chapman arrived from Wellington by yesterday's ferry steamer. Colon p1 Roberts, Colonel Cooper, Major Hutton, and Captain Williamson were passengers from Wellington by Saturday's ferry steamer. Mr I>. O'Leary, inspector of permanent way at Westport and Nelson, has retired after 40 years' sorvice with the Department. The Hon. Sir Francis Bell was a passenger from Wellington by Saturday's ferry steamer. Ho will return to Wellington to-morrow night. Mr R. H. Reany. who has been Public Works District Engineer at nui for many years, has been appointed to tako chargo of the Nelson and Marlborough districts. It is notified in General Orders that 2nd Lieutenant. V. Stocker, M.C., Unattached List (b), General List, is appointed physical and bayonet-fighting instructor in New Zealand training camps, and is grant©:! the temporary" rank of lieutenant whilst so employed. 3>ated January 28th, 1918. Lieutenant Frank Treweek, formerlv of Christchurch and more recently of HaAvera, who left early last year in the Mounted Brigade with the 2-lth Reinforcements, and subsequently transferred ti the Camel Corps, has been promoted' to be assistant adjutant of his battalion. Mr G. W. I>. Mulgan, solicitor, of Auckland, late of Christchurch, who has been training in England for some time, has been gazetted to a commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Mr Mulgnn passed sixth in the examination for commissions, with over SO per cent, of marks. Mr W. Pryor, secrotary of Ibe New Zealand Employers' Federation, becaina seriously ill on Thursday morning afc Auckland, and -was unable to appear before the Arbitration Court. Later in the day he was removed to a private hospital, where an operation for appendicitis was performed. Mr Prvor is now reported to be making -satisfactory progress. The Hon. Colonel Baillic, M.L.C.,
celebrated his ninety-first birthday at Wellington on Friday. Owing to a recent family bereavement the birthday was kept- very quietly, only a few older friends visiting him, but many congratulatory telegrams were received during tho day, one being from the Bishop of A'elson conveying greetings from that diocese. Mr F. M. Drewitt, of the United S3rvico Hotel, has received word from his son, Captain H. F. Drewitt, that in thelast week of December lie was protnotpd from the rank of lieutenant to that of flight-commander, with the rank of captain. Captain Drewitt is with tho Roval Flying Corps in France, and won liis promotion in the field. He is an expupil of the Auckland Flying School. He left New Zealand in January, 1917, and lias been in France for about eight months. Captain Drewitt was educated at the Waitaki Ivors' High School, and is 23 years of ngr>. The Rov. J. Paterson, pastor of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, took tho services in the church yesterday after an absence of about throe months, caused by illness. There wore largo congregations at all the «ervices, and at. the close of tho morning scrvicc Mr Georg.' Burn, session dork, welcomed Mr Paterson back again on behalf of tho congregation. Mr Paterson thanked the congregation for the kindly expressions mad© on its behalf by Mr lJurn. and also thankod it for holding so well together during his absencc. Mb said that it would probably' he some little time before he could tr.ko over his full duties, and ho hoped they would not cxpect too much of him in ih; meantime.
