Progress of the War.

It is some considerable time since the cables contained such a well-diversified and interesting selection of war news as the messages' to-day record. The West front has "been the scene of greatly increased activity on the part of the Allies, and several successful local enterprises are reported. Following close upon the successful raids of the Australians and the Canadians on their respective sectors, the New Zealanders on Wednesday carried out a successful raid eastward of Polygon Wood, taking several prisoners. Away to the South, in Lorraine, the French forces on the same day executed a particularly brilliant local movement, deeply penetrating the German lines on a wide front, and taking over 500 prisoners. Apart from these successful raiding activities a report from Sir Douglas rtaig shows that tho aerial service has boon getting in some fine -work, bombing not only military objectives behind the enemy's iincs, but penetrating -well into Germany and attacking towns of military importance. In Palestine, General Allenby's advance continues, and the British forces have now reached the outskirts of Jericho. The Russian situation is as chaotic as ever, and it seems fairly clear that Petrograd will pass into the enemy's hands. A reassuring statement regarding the submarine menace i? mado by Admiral Lord Jellicoe, in which he indicates that the destroyer is the most efficient of the methods used for combating those pests of the sea.
