Shoebridge, 10-563, W< lington Battalion, Now Zealand, w was among the first prisoners to arri from Turkey, states that he was « Raged' in an attack at Anafarta 1915, when, the Anzaes were forced retire. As he left the fiel<l hqsr shot in the elbow and was takpn wi other New Zcalanders from Gallipoli a jolting cart. When they stopped the roadside an old Turkish woman i laboured them with a heavy stick, k ing his mate, who was suffering fr a serious bayonet wound in his stoma< The body was left on the roadside. Shoebridge says he was sent -Lo good hospital in Constantinople, but a few days was told that the Brit wero ill-treating Turkish prisoners, a as a reprisal was sent to a buildi like a stable. The windows wi boarded and the place dark. Ho * laid on a dirty floor, and was given < blanket only. His wounds wero i attended to. Later he was sent various hospitals. Throughout his treatment • the ft was wretched, consisting of bre boiled wheat, and potatoes. Other prisoners state that the Brit ' prisoners died like flies, and w buried, unclothed and • uncoffuied, holes holding four each. The condition of prisoners from I was indescribable. At first they co not believe that they were Briti Some were clad in a shirt only. The prisoners received £4 mont from tho Americans. The Dutch C sul was permitted to buy food for th« but prices were terrible. They stayed ten weeks in Austria route to Britain. They state that food is worse there, and scarcer ti in Turkey. Conditions in Turkey now liiuch improved.
