Mr Lloyd George, m the Houso of Commons* admitted that the Versailles War Council possessed executive powers. General Sir Henry Rawlinson has been appointed British representative on the Versailles "War Council. Sir Henry Rawlinson, commander of the Fourth Army, is one of the most accomplished and highly-trained of modern British generals. ' He lias mastered the learning of his profession, and has a perfect understanding of str.ff work. His military career dates from ISS-l, when he entered the (30th Rifles. He saw active service in the Burma nud Soudan campaigns, and in the South African war. He was commandant of the Staff College from 1903-ti. commanded the 2ncl Brigade at Aldershot 1907-10. and the 3rd Division at Salisbury Plain 1910-14. On the outbreak of the European war he was given command of the 4th Division on the Aisne, and was then nut in command of the new IV. Corps, which included the 7th Division. and which landed in Flan dors in the beginning of October, ]914. l n the spring of 19lG he was appointed to the command of the new Fourth Army, which took its placo in the line on the right of the old Third Army in the Samme area. He was in command of the wholo front when the battle of the Somme opened on Julv Ist, 191 G. On the first two days of the battle he commanded the wholo of the five corps on that front. When the German retreat began in the spring of 1917. Sir Henry Rawlinson led the siu thorn part of the British advance. It, wa.s his men who entered Peronno and fought their way to the gates of St. Quontin.
