Their Ercellcncies the Earl and Countess of Liverpool will bo present at the animal prize giving ceremony at Christ's College this evening. His Excellency will form one of the Christ's College old boys cricket team which will play the College first eleven this afternoon. Dr. J. Henry Crawshaw left Kaiapoi yosterday to resume his military duties. Dr. Pcttey, who has been absent in the Old Country for the past twelvo months, will return to Ashburton at an early date. Mr J. Craigie, M.P., and Professor J. Macniillan Brown were passengers from Wellington by yesterday's ferry steamer. Mr Thomas Claude Kincaid was yesterday morning, upon the motion of Mr Geo. Harper, admitted by Mr Justice Chapman as a solicitor of the Supdenio Court. The Rev. John Paterson, who has been absent from tho pulpit for the past four months, through illness, will resume his ministry at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church on Sunday nest, when ho will preach at both services. At a meeting representative of tho Phristchurch Baptist Ministers' and Deacons' Courts, a resolution of sympathy with the widow and family of tho late Dr. 11. Bedford, and also with the New Zealaud Allianco, was passed. Mr Percy Fulton, Deputy Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in Christchureh, has been appointed Returning Officer for tho electoral district of Avon. Mr Fulton is a roturned soldier, who was, severely wounded while on active service with the New Zealand forces. The Hon. John Barr,. M.L.C., has resigned tho position of secretary of the Hotel Employees' Union, which he has held for a period of ten years. Tho resignation was accepted at the annual meeting of tho union, and Mr P. "\V. Evans, who has been acting as organising secretary for tho past year, was appointed to fill the vacancy. Mr Robert Grcig, the well-known actor, who has many friends in Christchurch, has been appointed an associate director of Harry Richards Tivoli Theatres, Ltd., Sydney. His new duties include control of the firm's stages of the theatres in Australia. Mr Greig will also act as producer, and may from time to time bo seen on the stage again. Count von Luckner, who is now imprisoned on Ripa Island in Lytteiton harbour, has decided -to write a book giving life experiences since setting forth on his memorable voyage in tho iSeeadler. The Count, by the way, is said by those who know' him, to be of vory powerful physique. So strong aro his hands in fact that it is possible for him to bend a copper coin by pressing it between his thumb and forefinger. News has reached the Dominion to tho effect that Mr T. H. Murray, formerly of Dunedin, but now an* engi-noer-lieutsnant in the Royal Navy, was serving ill one of his Majosty'3 ships in Homo waters during December, when she was torpedoed by a German submarine. Ten men wero lost, mostly members of tho engine-room staff, but Engineer-Lieutenant Murray was among the saved, being fortunato in escaping with a few slight scalds from escaping steam. Mr Murray was in tho motor business in Duncdm before going Home to join • the Navy shortly after the outbreak of hostilities.
