SHEEPOWN ER S' UNION.
1 MEEHXG OF COMMITTEE. A meeting of the General Committee of the Canterbury Sheepowners' Union was held yesterday afternoon, Mr G. B. Starky presiding. A long letter from Mr Edgar Jonos in reference to the question of the Government giving instruction in aviation was considered. It was decided to adjourn further consideration of the matters involved uutil a larger meeting of the Union. The question of the Union taking active steps to bring before the Minister of Railways the danger to the public of unprotected railway crossings, especially that at the Styx, was briefly considered, but in view of the present action being taken by the Automobile Association and other bodies, it was decided to take no steps at present. A memorandum submitted to the meeting stated that, a matter which the Union had been asked to take up was the question of the limited time given to farmers in order to 'lodge objections to assessments of incomo in cases where the farmer had not sent in a return. In many cases, it was stated, the farmer had not had time to go into his books and make up his return before the dato for objection. Consequently the assessment made by the Commissioner stood, and he had no alternative but to pav the tax, although it might be much in excess of what he should be entitled to pay. After a short discussion tho mat tcr was dropped for the present.
