The writer continues: "He was a very cool, capabte N.C.O.j and, being my platoon sergeant, is a great loss to me 1 and the company. He was held in very high esteem, and wa« very popular with his men and the officers of this company. We all sympathise very deeply with you m ypu£ loss." The late Sergeant Manson left New Zealand with the 3rd Reinforcements, and. is the second son to make the supreme sacrifice. Two brothers are still on active service—Rifleman Randell Manson, who was severely wounded ai few months ago, and Sergeant Wyn Manson. who is an instructor in the Lewis Machine-gun 'Section in England. Flight-Lieutenant Talbot., who was accidentally killed while makinga flight in England, - was - one of the. Weraroa. Training Farm, boys, About eight years ago. Buchanan, 219 v Peterborough street, has been notified that her son. Corporal L. H. Buchanan, Military Medal, -was gassed and admitted to hospital on January 28th, This is the first mishap that Corporal Buchanan, who enlisted in the 4th Reinforcements, and left New Zealand when he was only 17 years of age, has experienced in nearly three years of war, during which time his total leave has amounted to some three weeks. He served at Gallipoli, and then went on to France, winning the Military Medal at' Messines last year. He,has been recommended for a bar to his _ medal. He was educated at the Technical Col-' lege, and was an active' member of the ■ Albion Football Club. He was at onet time on the reading staff of "The Press.lA Mrs McMahon, of 72 Bealey street, Christchurch, has received advice that her husband. Saddler John McMahon, has been killed iu action in France. Saddler McMahon, before going to the front with the 23rd Reinforcements, was a gunner in the stationed at Lyttelton _ and Wellington. He was born in "Wellington being thei second 'son of Mrs McMahon, of 66 Ghuznee street, and was educated ati the Mar is t Brothers' School. He was an all-round sportsman, being a member of the Albion Football Club's senior team when it -won the Canterbury Rugby Union's D.C.L. Shield in 1908, and was also well known in cricketing circles, having played in "Wellington for Marist Brothers' Old Boys up to the time of his going to the front. A brother, Private Terry McMahon, present in hospital in England, having . lost a log some months ago in France, and another brother is in camp. Mr and Mrs J. W. "We&rn 3 of Worcester street, Linwood, received by the last mail particulars as to the death! of their grand-son, Captain A. B. Cook, of the Royal Flying Corps, whose death occurred on .November 20th, 1917, whilst he was making an aerial reconnaissance at Cambrai, Franoe. Captain Cook was the son of the late Mr A. E. Cook, of this city, well known in Rugby football circles as a Merivale and Canterbury representative. Amongst letters of sympathy -were those from their Majesties the King' and Queen, from J the Secretary of State for War, and from fellow officers, all of whom spoke in terms of admiration for their late comrade as a fearless air-man. The officer commanding the squadron in Franoe said: "Captain Cook was one of the best officers in the squadron; he was of a most cheery disposition, and always looked on the bright side of things, whicli is difficult at times in France." Chaplain Wilson wrote: "Our late comrade was an extraordinarily good fellow, and as fine a pilot as he was a man; the whole squadron loved him." The late Captain Cook showed such grit and determination in his hazardous work that his promotion to captain was most rapid. He was a typical young New Zealander, and his untimely death at the outset of a brilliant career is greatly to ba deplored. One of his friends in the Royal Flying

Corps beads the following account of his death: At 10.J.3 on the morning oi the 20th (November) Cookie ''this '.vas the name by which his friends knew him), and his observer left the ground to attempt a bomb raid oil German troops hastily being moved to the south to stem the tide of battle near Cambrai. The weather was impossible, clouds being at 300 feet. Flying through clouds is always attended by great uncertainties, as is well known to us all, and perhaps most of all realised_Ly Captain Cook, who was an extraordinarily good pilot, and oi : much cxpcrience. Fivo minutes after leaving, the machine was seen in a vertical spin coming through the mist, the right wing crumpled up. They struck the ground about 500 yards from the aerodrome. The ambulance with R.A.M.C. orderly got off, I think, before the machine reached tho , earth It was then clear that my dear old friends, Cook and Coppard (tho observer* were quite dead. I am convinced that both were killed by_ the fall. I can assuro you that neither ■suffered the least pain." They were buried side by side. Mrs F. Selfe, of MoSaveney's road, Marshland, has been informed by tho Defence Department that her husband, Private Frank Selfe, is being invalided home. ■Mr H. V. Gully, solicitor, of 2s"elson, has receivea news that his youngest son, Lewis, was killed on February 11th. Before joining the Naval Service young Gully was an engineer, in the Anchor Company's service. Nows has been received that Private Cecil W. Dixon, a son o'f Mr Fred Dixon, of Nelson, died of wounds on February 6th.
