THE CHURCH AND THE WAR.
BISHOP AVERILL'S COMMENTS.
(rr.Kss association telegbak.)
AUCKLAND, October 19
In tho course of his charge at the opening of tho Anglican Syaod to-day, Bishop Aver ill said tho various Trust Boards had invested £12,000 in tho recent war loans. Sixteen clergy from the diocese were on active service, therefore it seemed only just that he should now claim exemption for clergymen called in the ballot, so that tho chaplains required might be supplied, and the work of tho dioceso maintained. Referring to the proposed new dioceso of Taranaki, Dr. Averill said that, considering the rapidly increasing population of the North Island, aiid tho increasing claims on the Bishops of Auckland and Wellington, tho time seemed .ripe for ; action. Discussing tho war. Dr. _ AVerill said tho causes which led to international war woro but an exaggeration of tho causes which led to industrial unrest, and the solution of tho industrial problem would undoubtedly make a real advance in the. solution of tho international problem. The Church had undoubtedly failed to lend sympathetic car to tne just claims and aspirations of the great wage-earning class. Tho comradeship of all classes at the front would, he hoped, break down the foolish artificial distinction between man and man, and develop a new sense of mutual respect, when the men returned to civil life.
