FORTUNE TELLERS.
TO TAB EDITOR OP 1 iHB FIVSS. Sir, —The following paragraph in jour issue of to-day attracted my attention: "At Auckland yesterday Madame Hyland was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment without liaru labour on a ctinrgo of fortune-tolling. She had been fined on a similar charge at Hawera nine years ago." ine sentence wus, of coui.se, ludicrously inadequate, and what especially strikes me iu this connexion is the apparent total neglect of our local police to deal with this evil, which everybody knows is rampant in our midst. This fortune tolling is largely practised in Christchurch, and is even extensively advertised in the daily papers. 1 myself know of xuany credulous lemalos, -who should know better, who habitually consult these people, and ftccop their unwholesome readings <5f the past, present, and future, as gospel truth, ivril speaking, lying, and slander are at a premium with tho morbidly inclined among us, especially among tho largo section of our female population who have nothing better to do, and the resultant harm to the community is incalculable. . X do not write as a wowser, but simply as ono who has suffered through being maligned by these impostors. 1 am glad that a lead has boen given in tho direction of wiping out a growing and danf crously morbid i»ractice, ana I sincerely hope that in the near future "fortune-tellers," male and *omale, will be crndicated from tho community. —Yours, eta., ,< AN - TI .
