j f— — W.C.T.U. The Now Brighton Bra net of the W.C.T.U. held a gilt alternoon in tlic Methodist Schoolroom on Thursday, in aid of the local Bed Cross Pur.d. During the afternoon, | Mesdamea Ainslev, Mogridge, Smith, ivnd , Milner contributed musical items, and .Mrs 1 W. J. "Williams gave a very interesting address. Afternoon tea wae provided. A largo number of sifts were handed, in, also 17s G& in cash. BAND OF HOPE VXIO.V . The monthly meeting o£ the Bund of j Hope Union was held in the Y.M.C.A. on j Thursday. The pieeidcnt, Mr W. Goodman, presided over a largo attendance of j delegates. It wna decided that the presidcut represent the Union at Jvaiapoi, and j that the Union (jive a programme *t | on November 30th. Voice °£ thanks were passed to the Mandolin Band and Avousidc Orchestra for their services at the recent contest. A vote of sympathy «-a fl passed to the family of tho late Mr Trerisc. members standing. The president , reported that the contest had been a great Bucccss. financially and otherwise. A committee was appointed to consider mig-gcstion<» for the improvement of futuro contests, ilr It. M. Cummins resigned tho position of secretary, and Mr P. C. Lucas was elected ill his place. It was decided to plaoc on record the Union's appreciation of tho late sociotiiry's ecrviccs. j OPAWA SCHOOL COMMITTEE. ! Ai the monthly meeting' of tho Opax - " School Committer, there _ weTC present— Messrs I?. B. Turner (chairman), Beanland. J. F. Scott, J. Pycroft, J. Triat, 0. E. Schneider, W. L. King-, and J. T. McHarg (hon. secretary). The headmaster's. report stated that the average attendance for (September was 335.7, with a roll number .of 380.- • A deputation from tho School Committees' Association, iteasrs Pcvoriil and Kutterfield, waited on the committee, to place before it the advantages of being represented on the Association. Aftor consideration. it too decidcd to join the Association, and Mieears Pycroft and Kin;; were appointed deleRate!. A vote of sympathy wag passed "to Mrs Trerroe find family, tho late. Mr J. T. Treri=e ha.vini? served for eleven years on the School Committee, in which ho had taken a vc.ry keen interest. It was resolved to have twenty-four names .added to the Itoll of Honour in the school. IvJ XDEKGARTHiN ASSOCIATION. Tho monthly meeting of the Creche and Kindergarten Association was held in the Y.M.C.A., Mrs Taylor presiding. Mis Taylor, said that since last meeting slio and the secretary (Mrs Evans) Jmd been making efforts to stimulate interest in kindergarten work for the purpose o£ obtaining students to train in tho schools. She proposed issuing a small pamphlet to the various girls' schools in so that parents of girb in the upper classes should have kindergarten teaching and its infiuencs brought under their notice. Miss Hull's report was read. During the term, Miss Orunge, a student, had resigned, and Miss Scott had taken up her duties at Sydenham. The students* examination at the end of tbe term showed a marked improvement. t Tlic examination results were: —S?niora (possible. 130): Miss Keir 83, Miss Bntbarford'76, Miss Perry "72. Juniors (possible 120): Miss Gorrie 75, Miss Lockhead 66. During the winter t-erm, Dr. Elinor addressed tho mothers and friends at tbe three kindergarten schools. It was moved iiy Mrs Chilton, and seconded, by Mm KolLaway, that the three schoolß each hrdd their own Christmas festivities this-
year. The secretary was instructed to convey a vote of sympathy to Mr# Stoclo in her rccent bereavement, also to forward it letter to the Rev. Mr Job, regarding the Leyden street Hall ' PhiUpstown, now boms' rented by the Kindergarten Association, ftnd | report at next meeting. WELCOME HOME. Itiflemnn Hoy. Richardson* ot 217 Moorliouee avenue, a member of the Bth. Rein-. i forcemen-Us, was entertained by his friends at a welcome home social in tho Caledonian nail. Mr It. Stillwell presided over a large attendance. The Mayor (Mr 11. Holland) accorded the returned eoldier a civic reception. Mr Bourne extended a welcome on behalf of the Federal Football Club, of which Rifleman Hichardfion is a member. During' tho evening' an interesting pro- | gramme' wn» given by Misses G. Sproston, M. Sliarman, E. Spencer, and Mrs Watson. Messrs L, Croft, H. Kirk, F. Gillespie, _ E. j Herbert, and J. ITibbard. Rifleman Rich- .. ardson was wounded in iho Samme offensive, j and afterwards contracted pleurisy. He has ! a brother at the front. The five soldier's mates, who left Christchnrch_ with Rifleman Riohardson, have nil been killed in action,, and reference to them was made by tlio chairman of the social. Richardson spenka highly of the Salvation Army'* ■ good work amongst the troops in Franco, especially that of Captain Walls, of Now Zealand. SEMVYN NURSING- DIVISION. The Selwyn Ntrrsing Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade met Tinder Mrs i Russell,' lady superintendent. Tho annual j report and balance-sheet wor© read, ehowintf j the work for the year to have been very ; satisfactory. A hearty vote of thanks wa* passed to" Mrs Shields, retiring war service s-scrctury. A demonstration on washing a patient in bed and on bed-making, was t-hsn given by Sinter Anderson, a former member of tho Division, who, after answering various was Accorded a> very hearty vot© of thanks. Members thon had good practice in roller bandaging and' bedmaiing.
