CORRESPONDENCE.
-♦ STATE TRADING. TO THE EDITOR OF "THE TRESS. Sir,—ln your leading article in today's paper you say "tho Wellington papers havo pointed out an anomaly m tho treatment by the Stat© of certain trading concerns, which havo to compete with publicly owned enterprises." Now, Sir, I would like to point out another a.nomaly by, a State trading enterprise in our midst that competes against private enterprise. I refer to tho State Coal Depot. All the private coal dealers in the city are forced to pay rates to the City Council. Not so the State, yet the private dealer has to compete against the State, which docs not even have to put a two-penny stamp on its receipts for two pounds and over.—Yours, etc., ONE IN THE TRADE. THAT HANMER TRtP. TO THE EDITOB OF "THE PBESS." Sir, —Tho statement made in the House with reference to _ the expenses of this trip is rather unfair to the Canterbury Automobile Association, as on jghe surfacc it leads the publio to believe that' the Association received £8 12s lid for securing the motor-cars used on that occasion. This is not so. The sum was for out of pocket expenses, suoh as telegrams to members and petrol used, tho Health Department having promised the Association thai they would bo responsible for all expenses incurred. —Yours, etc., A. S. CLARKSON, President Canterbury Automobile Association. August 24th, 1917.
