The inconsistency of a man employed in the De.cn.c U.partment advancing a plea for exemption 011 religious grounds was commented on by tno Military bcrvice Board at Auckland on •Moiiday, during mc hearing or the appeal bv Wilfred J. Davtv, ciuik at tuc defence Oliice. Apielitiut staged that ho .was a member 01 the Testimony of Jesus, a£<i his religious convictions "forbade him to bear arms, or to take any part in warfare. It would also l>o against his convictions to perform arnbulanco work. "Then how is it that you are working in the Defenec Department at all-" asked a member of tho Hoard. "To bo consistent, you should certainly have resigned your position sooner than have taken on any work in connexion with the war!" As tho sect of which Davcy was a member did not come within tno scope of tho regulations governing exemption of religious bodies, tho appeal was dismissed. Appellant was instructed to proceed to camp with the Scjjtoinber. draft, but tho Board agreed to recommend that he should bo given non-combatant work.
