The death is announced of an ex- i Secretary of State, Mr Richard Olncy. j MR COLTHUKST PALAIRET. j An early settlor, a keen lover of sport, and a typical English gentleman; passed away iii Mr Colthnrst Palairet, whose doai 11. in liis 7'Jth year, occurred nn Saturday last. Mr Palairct was born on October 12th. I>3B. at Bartholev House, tin? residence oi his grandfather. Mr . Colthurst Raternan. in Monmouthshire. Mr Palairet arrived in Canterbury by the .ship Ma t oak a in | ISGO, and was for some years engaged ' in sheep-fanning. Sub>rf|iK'ntly !ie was appointed to the Deeds Registry Office at (.'liristchureii. After tile Land Tran»ter Aet came into i force Mr Palairet retired from Govern- ' mont employ, and went into the business of licensed land broker and general t-ommifsion agent. He was one of the first- in the Dominion to lie licensed as a land broker under tTje Land Transfer Act. In 1870 be married the second daughter n[ the late My Francis Slater, solicitor, of Christchurch. who prerleceased him m>iiic eight years ago. Mr Palairet took a prominent, part in -.■nii.nilerrin.:. ami was a member, and Mibseijiientlv captain, of the old Canterbury Mounted Rifles. When the Third Contingent—tin: Hough Riders—were undergoing their training in camp on the Show Grounds at Addington, prior to leaving for cxnitli Africa, Captain Palairet was on the camp staff, and discharged efficiently the duties of camp quartermaster. He also took part, in the training of the Sixth Contingent. In sport Mr Palairct took great, interest in hunting, and for many years was associated with the Chriistchurch. Hunt Club, of which body he was treasurer. He was a member of the old Midland Cricket, Clnb, and during the. whole period of the club's existence was its vice-president. Later he was a. member of the Veterans' Club. As a tennis player Mr Palairet, was keen and enthusiastic, and was president of the Linwood Tennis Club from its inception almost to the day of his death. Tie was also a. keen angler and a good shot. In Church nvatters Mr Palairct was a prominent, supporter of Holy Trinity, Avonsidc. Of late years, owing to failing health, he led a retired life. His death will recall to the memory of his old friends one who was aways a good comrade and a true sport. He leaves two daughters—Mrs AV. S. Godfrey and Mrs T. H. Jackson.

A well-known resident of AneV-.hmd, Mr !R. Harry Swales, dropped Jesd 01.1 the Onehunga railway station on Friday evening.
