THE LIQUOR TRAFFIC

The Government is apparently preparing tbo public for tbc State purchase of the drink traffic. Mr J. Hodge, Minister for Labour, in an interview, said that traditions disapproved of prohibition or municipalisation of the traffic, but favoured Stato purchase, providing pure beer, and transforming the public-house into a working-men's club, with indoor games. Tho ideal public-house should havo a tennis ground and bowling green, and tho local authorities should employ the profits of tho trado for the extension of amusements and recreations. CABINET ANITcONFERENCE. NO SITTING'S IN EASTER WEEK. (United Service.) LONDON, April 8. The sittings of the Empire War Cabinet and tho Imperial Conference have been suspended over Easter "Week. Tho meetings are likely to last into May. DOMINION MINISTERS IN ENGLAND. LONDON. April 8. Mr and Mrs Massey aro spending Easter at Eastbourne, and Sir Joseph and Lady Ward-at Minehead. Sir Joseph Ward visits Glasgow on May sth, when ho will review 20,000 members of the Boys' Brigade. ADMIRALTY CHANGE, ADMIRAL POORE RETIRES. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received April 10th, 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, April 9. Admiral Sir Richard Pooro has been placed on the retired list at his own request because he desires to facilitate the promotion of juniors. Admiral Sir Richard Poore is 64 years of age. lie was made Rear-Admiral in 11)03, and in the following yoar was appointed Rear-Admiral of tho Channel Fleet. In 1907 he was promoted to Vice-Admiral, and in 1908 was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Station. He remained in till 1911, when ho was promoted to Admiral, and the 6ame year was appointed Commander-in-Chief at the Nore. Lady Poore, his wife, recently published a volume of memoirs dealing mainly with life on tho Australian naval station.
