SHIPPING FREIGHTS.
INCREASE IN INTERCOLONIAL AND COASTAL SERVICES.
(I'IIESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM. 1
DUNEDIN, April o
It is understood that the schedule of intercolonial and coastal freights will bo adjusted in a week or two, this adjustment being tho sccond incrcaso in freight charges sinco tho outbreak of the Avar. Over a year ago an fcicrease of os per ton was made in intercolonial freights, whilo coastal freights were raised by 2s 6d. It was pointed out on that occasion _ that wages throughout the whole shipping serviceshad been considerably increased, while working charges respecting coal and all stores had been abnormally augmented owing to war conditions. Since then, wages bare further increased, while tho other charges have been similarly af•cvted to a heavier degree than before. For these reasons the present rate will certainly be increased, probably to a similar extent to that of-last year, intercolonial and coastal services, with a slightly heavier impost regarding general coastal produce. I'assengor fares will not be increased.
