SCHOOL TEACHERS AND THE WAR
Several matters afToctinc teachers in connexion with the ivar were under 10viev.- at Thursday's meeting of the Education Board. The Beckcnhani School Committee forwarded a resolution to the cffect that, no obstacle should be placed in tne way of any teacher of military age, whether in public primary, secondary or sectarian school, joining tho colours and fighting in tl:t* of the Empire. . 1 This resolution was rcceivcd. The tSumncr School t'-ommittco wrote, strongly protesting iipninst the exem]>tion from militai'y service of school teachers of private sectarian schools, while State Vchool teachers wero not exempted. A resolution ou similar lines had been paused by the Hoard at its last mooting, and accordingly the letter .was received.
Tlio Appointments Committee reported that ii circular had been received from the Department to the cffect that during t.hc currency of the war no application for retirement under the extended provisions of the Superannuation Act would be favourably considered. except in crises where it ruight be deemed desirable for the efficiency of tho service thai' tho retirement, should ho allowed. The Department also suggested that, in tho caso of teachers entitled to retire on superannuation the Board should endeavour to induce them, as a patriotic service, to continue teaching .during the currency of the war. Tt had been agreed by the committee to have, this circular published.
