BOROUGH COUNCILS.
SPBEYDON. The Spreydon Borough Council met List night. Present —Tho Mayor (MrW. :H.Wjneor). Councillors E. O'Rorke, G. H. D. Williamson E. Hayea. \f. J. Elliott, K. H. Taylor,' and A. Manhire. The Finance Committee recommended that £10 10s be voted to the Technical College. A Tho*Work& Committee .report recorded the completion of a concrete invert from Roeebery street t No. X drain. It also described several minor activities, and brought under the notice of the Council tho had etate of the underground drain from Tainui street to the river.—Adopted. - The Electrio Light Committee reported that the reticulation of the borough was almost complete, and that it was expected to have tho current turned on in the course of a few days. About 100 to 150 consumers bed made application for current. It had been thought that electrio current for Lincoln Toad could have been secured in conjunction with the Public Works Department or tho City Council,'but it had been found necessary to erect poles on the Spreyron aide and tho committee strongly recommended the Council to erect its own poles and ue© its own current, thus effecting a considerable economy.—Adopted. A lettCT from the Municipal Association ol New Zealand regarding municipal elections was rCoeived. , , , , . _ . The Department of Internal Affairs wrote with reference to the Council's enquiries as •to the control of outside competition in food pricce, that the issues involved were so large as to require careful consideration, and it was regretted that there waa no pToepect of the matter bsing considered .until after conclusion of the war. Considerable indignation waa expressed attho reply, as the Department had invited applications frciu borough councils for tho icakiD" of regulations conferring the powers oontained in Section 13 of tho Cost of Ljviti" Act, 1915, and it waa pointed out that after the Council had gone to considerable ti-oub]© in iUo matter the whole thins bad been deferred. Councillor Williamson moved that tho Department be acauainted with the fact that the Council was dissatisfied with tho reply gi<-en ar.cl that tho Government bo asked to pro' into the- matter fully now. Councilor Elliott seconded the motion, which wcs carried. A lengthy am! heated argument ensued as to t}i« best position for tbo transformers in connexion with the electric schemc and eventually it was moved that the Electric Li"ht Committee bo given power to" havo the transformers moved back inside the fence bordering Barrington otrect, and make the necessary arrangements for the purchase ol land. Councillor 'Hayes seconded the motion. The Mayor pointed out that hard work had been put in on the clcctric lighting eyetern, and t-ba effect of the motion would bo ■to hold it nn for months, just as tho whole thing was now practically carried through. The motion was lost.
