TRAVELS IN RUSSIA.
LECTURE BY MRS MICKLE. Last night at the Art Gall cry, Mrs Mickle save a very interesting lecture on ''Russia and the Russians." Mrs Mickle spoke of Petrograd. describing the great and fashionable street, the Nevski Prospect, vrith its palaces and public buildings, which she said was not excelled in any country. Many of the churches were minutely described, also the clergy and the great Eastern observances. The speaker touched briefly on the. industries c>f the country, and said that Russia -would probably become a great manufacturing country, as such industries as she had were of quite modern introduction. Mrs Mickle pointed out that. Petrograd was to some extent considered a city of foreigners, and that Moscow had the highest place in the affections of the people. Slve gave an interesting description of some of the principal churches and of the Kremlin and its great bell, which weighs SO tons. There were 365 churches in Moscow, that being the number of saints and Saints' days. The splendid church of St. Basil, near the Kremlin, was specially described, as also the services on the last night of Lent, which brought to a close the six weeks ol" ahstenenre from ordinary indulgence in food. She further spoke of the Russian language, and gave a brief account of some of the most distinguished authors. Mrs Mickle appeared in the Russian national dress, which wa f very handsome and of brilliant colours. At the conclusion of her address she was handed a bouquet "rf flowers. Mrs Myra Voting played very tasteful selections of Russian music at interval? A hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Mickle and Mrs Young was proposed by Miss Henderson, and carried a-mid applause. The meeting was given under the auspices of tlx? Women's ChrirtiaJi Temperance Union, the president of which occupied the chair. The proceeds are to be banded over for the benefit of the R-ed Cross 3nd Lady Liverpool Funds.
