THE LATE STRIKE.
SPECIAL CONSTABLES HONOURED.
A' social function was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Amberley, on Saturday evening, for the purpose of presenting a memento to the special constables and free labourers who assisted and responded to tho city's call during the recent waterside workers' strike. Mr P. G. Lewton (chairman of tho Amberley Town Board) occupied the chair, and had on his right the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Holland) and Mrs Holland, and on his left Mr G. D. Greenwood (tbe prime mover of the function), Mr J. O'Halloran (of Glentui), Mrs G. D; Greenwood, and Dr. Perry. After the toast of "The King" had been , honoured. Dr. Perry proposed the toast of "The Ladies," Mr W. Densem I (Christchurch) replying on their behalf. lAt this timo the seating capacity of the hall was severely taxed, there being over 300 local enthusiasts, and prTor to the next toast being honoured ovor fifty Lytteiton waterside workers made their appearance, having just arrived by motor-cars. Owing to the recent shingling of the North road, they had been delayed for an hour. Their appearance was met with a storm ,of applause. , . , i The Chairman road apologies from Colonel Chaffey and Major Overton, who wero unavoidably detained; Mr Holland, who was enthusiastically received, then prbposed the toast of ,"The" Special Constables," and briefly outlined the history, of the strike, and the call for assistance from the city to the country in the preserving of law and order. He then announced the names of the special constables, who, on making their appearance on the stage, were handed mementoes of the occasion by Mrs Hol--1 land. The mementoes took the form 'of a gold chased Maltese cross, the m- ' itials of the recipient being on the front, and on the reverse side tbe i words "S.C. 1913." Gorrie, J. Robertson, L. Fleming. H. Stanton F Stanton, M. C. Smith. A. C. Selby, R. Smith, G. !W. Smith, W. Parsons, A. R. Greenwood, H. Davis. W. Thompson, J. H. Watson, J. McNally, D. J. Brown, J. -Watson. G. R- Brown, L- Wornall. .After cheers and musical honours had been tendered, -Messrs Stead IC °°] , , S ' and Rabertson replied on behalf ot the . specials. , , ~ Mt J. O'Halloran then proposed the ! toast of "The Prime Mover (Mr G. D. j Greenwood)," who suitably replied. Other toai-ts honoured were Ibo 'Mayor of Christchurch" (the Chapman), and "The Lytteiton Workers" (Mr Jacques). Musical items wore contributed _by Mrs Perry, Messrs W. Densem "W. Thompson"! G. Yates, Healey and V. J. Rhodes. "Auld Lang Syne terminated a very enjoyable programmo. Ibo floor was then cleared to .allow of an hour's dancing, Misses Rhodes and Uason sunplying the music. Cheers were exchanged by the "specials and the waterside workers, and the largest gathering ever housed in the Oddfellows' Hall then wended ite way home- i ward. j
