EDUCATION BILL.
OTAGO BOARD'S RECOMMENDATIONS. (PKISS ASSOCIATION TXtEGB-U.) ;- DUNEDIN, August 3. The Otago Education Board has decided to forward to tho Minister of Education and chairman of the Education Committee of tho House tho following additional findings with respect to tho Education Bill: — Staff of District High Schools—Any jriuciplo adopted to fix the numerical strength of a secondary school should also bo mado applicable to tho secondary department of a district high school. The Board points out that while-it is mado obligatory upon Boards to provide for the conveyance of children to school in Section 51, no specific provision is made in respect of tho payment of ths cost of such conveyance. Salaries provided for pupil teachers and probationers do not offer sufficient inducement to young people, especially males, to enter tho teaching profession. The Board suggests that the rates, of pay should be equal to those paid to cadets in any other Department of tho Public Sen-ice.
The Board also suggests that tho quorum of a Board should be half the total number where the latter is an even one, and a majority where the total number is an odd one; that the provisions of Section 75, Sub-section 8, which fixes tho salaries to be paid by Boards to relieving teachers, cannot bo given effect to unless an increased grant is made to Boards for tho purpose.
