'._ Count Witte (Menschikoff—Problem), now rising ten years oid, was sold in Melbourne a- fortnight ago for liw* guineas. . A Wellington owner priced the Welleslcy Stakes winner, Byraettius, early last week, but, so far, nothing has come of the negotiations. ' Mr Jas. ..Walden, for many years racecourse detective in different parts of New Zealand, died at his home at Miramar last after -a long and very painful illness. . . F. Meagher was 'seen in the saddle at the Woodlands Hunt Club Meeting on Wednesday. This means that he will be able to take the mount on Grey King in the National Hurd!e-3. C. Pritchard's Grand National team will consist of -Pimpernel, Exotic, Mount Victoria and Cyra (Cyrus—Aphrodite), a maiden candidate bred by Mr Whitney. The Trentham trainer named is booked to leave on Thursday next. The. first foal of-the season made its appearance on Saturday morning .at Crissoge, when one of Mr G. P. Donnelly's brood mares, an unnamed daughter of Gold Reef and-Pearl.Shot, produced a filly to Formative.

The latest addition to W. Bush's team is the gelding Selwyn, who is said to be something out of the ordinary. He certainly gave a very line exhibition over the big iences one day last week. Valhalla has not started so'far in Sydney, but he has received plenty ' of notice, and he is quoted about fifth favourite for the Epsom Handicap, a couple of points longer than Bonßeve. Recently he was weighted in a sixfurlongs race at Rosehill, and given 'Sst 91b, but his trainer cancelled his engagement. , Top Note, winner of the Hunters' Hardies at "Woodlands Hunt Club Meeting had not previously. started a a jumping event. She is a qualified hunter, and will be a runner at Riocarton. The San Fran mare is trained by T-. Higgins :at Opaki, and was ridden by A. Watson.

Old Naumai is shortly to go into work again, and ho will later on bo sent to the West Coast .to race. His last trip there was most successful, and on one occasion he had to je scratched, owing to his rider beiag unable to obtain a sufficiency of lead to make up his weight. Flying Glond, wiio prevailed in the Woodlands Hunt Club Cup, has now won that event four years in succession. He lias been ridden on each occasion by his owner, Mr A. Buick. Flying Cloud is now between fifteen and sixteen years of age, and has been moro or less in commission since he was a three-year-old.

j At Canning Park (West Australia) : races on July 18th the ex-Southland jumper, Ngawera (9st), ran second to Southport (list 61b) in the Maddihgton '.Brush Steeplechase (about two miles). There was a field of seven, and Nga--1 wera, who started at an outside price, ! was well ahead at tho last fence, but unseated his rider, leaving Southport . to win easily. R. Lougley has received an addition to his team in the shape of the. six-year-old chestnut gelding Omanawa by Patronus—Miss Kairanga. This gelding, who appears rather small for a steeplechaser, finished third in the Turanganui Steeplechase Handicap at the Gishorne Meeting recently. Ho is engaged in the Tally-ho Plate and Hunt Club-Cup at next week's Meeting. Jockeys who have retainers for the present season are as follow:—A. Oliver ; arid' W. Jones will again ride the Chokebore horses.

At- the annual meeting of the Masterton Racing Club, tho stewards were empowered to allocate £3000 in stakes for tno coming soaeon, which is an increaso of £640 on last season. Mr J. H. Pollock was re-elected handicapper and Mr T. Cameron starter. Tho president, Mr Vallance, congratulated tho club upon being in a sounder position than ever before, though regret was expressed by members that the Racing Commission had deprived tho club of one day's racing in tho year.

The Hack f-l;indicap _ jat (seven .-vrlongs) at tho Woodlands Hunt gathering on Weduesday was rather an extraordinary one. Six horses started, Kakawai being very troublesome at the post, and the field got away in "i'ollow-thc-loader" style. In the run home, Kaka.wai put in a strong claim, endeavouring to .squeeze in between Portcullis and Sir Agnes, hut was chopped out. Passing the judge's box, the field was practically hunched, and there was a good deal of speculation as to the winner. From the Press stand, it looked as though Portcullis had won by a neck, but tho judge posted Rangikapua. This did not satisfy several of the public, who seemed to be positive that Keynote was first past the post. Keynote was then officially announced as the winner, but on returning, to scale, his rider fCrerar) failed to draw the weight by -2lb. Keynote was therefore disqualified, and tho race awarded to Portcullis, Sir Agnes being placed secoiyd. Tho judgo certainly did not have an easy task.
