PROHIBITION PROTESTED . AGAINST.
MUNICIPAL, CONTROL SUGGESTED. (nUESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) TE KUITI, June 4. A conference of local bodies in "the King Country, to consider the liquor laws, was held at Te Kuiti. There were present? Messrs J. Ormsby (Otorohanga), chairman, E. Martin (Tβ Kuiti), Allanson (Kaitieke), Wilkie (Ohakune), Berry (Waitomo), Boddy (Awakino), Sandison (Ohura), and Short (Taumarunui). The chairman referred to tho fact of having been connected with the placing of restrictions on the district. Conditions bad changed. Restrictions did not restrict, as had been fondly hneed by the Maoris. They had to deal with new conditions which had .arisen. The Europeans now outnumbered the Maoris by ten to one, or more, and they had "a right to be heard. A motion was carried: —"That this meeting, representing various local bodies, -unanimously .resolve that the restrictions made by section 272 of the Licensing Act, 1910, he annulled." A further motion in favour of the municipal control of the sale of lioiior in the district was carried; it was further decided that a deputation should wait on the Primo Minister on the occasion of his visit to Te Kuiti on June 13th; also that the deputation wait on the Minister and on Parliament during I the forthcoming session.
