FIRES. ANNEXE DESTROYED AT OTAKI HOSPITAL.

WELLINGTON. June 3. -A, fire at Otaki Hospital this afternoon resulted in the destruction of a five-roomed annexe of the main building. It comr-i*.-" {he norters' and maids' rooms and store rooms, and lav on the eastern slue oi tho main building, sheltered from the westerly winds. The porter is said to have gone out, leaving a small fire in the grate, sparks from which apparently fell and ignited the woodwork. A patient noticed smoke and gave the alarm. and*. Dr. Huthwaite organised a bucket brigade, which managed, by the use of wet blankets, to prevent the fire Spreading to the main building, the wall of which was scorched. The annexe was burned to the ground. The patients in the Hospital were got ready for removal, but happily there was no necessity to them. Tho buildings were insured— two-thirds in the South British office, and onethird in the State office,, but: tho amounts are not available.
