THE RUGBY GAME.
SEVEN-A-SLDE TOURNAMENT. The annual Scven-a-sido Tournament under tho auspices of the Canterbury Rugby Union was held yesterday, under un--feasant weather conditions. Tho first match was commenced at 10 a.m., and tho competition continued until dusk. At the commencement the weather was fine, but about 11 o'clock rain commenced to, fall and continued throughout tho whole day. A lar<_e number of teams competed, and the different coin petit ions wore watched with ! a good deal of interest. The last game of -he day, between Christchurch and TJnivcrsitv. provided a great contest, and it was ordy after about twenty minutes' nla** that Christchurch were enabled to win throu'di a 'Varsity player kicking the ball over the deadball line. Following fire details of the play:— FIRST GRADE. First Rouml. Merivale defeated Sydenham by default. 'Varsity (8) defeated Marists (niH. Old Boys (17,» defeated Albion (nil). Christchurch (3) defeated Linwood (nil). . . Semi-final. ■ Christchurch (» point) defeated Merivale (nil). This was a great game, and in the end Atkinson kicked over the dead-ball line. It was presumably quite accidental, and Christchurch won by half a point. 'Canterbury College beat Old Boys, 12 to nil. Firal. Christchurch (J point) defeated 'Var•sit"" (nil). Each side in turn attacked, but eventual.*- a 'Varsity player kicked the ball over the dead-ball line, ard Chrchurch were returned . winners. The followirg players comprised the wining P. Guiney, A. H. Guinev. A. Warner. C. Murray. H. Vehrtens, F. V. Robinson, and T. Burns. SECOND GRADE. First Round. Old Boys (6) v. Merivale (0) Clayton ard Young scored. >• irewa (8) beat Linwood (nil). Wairewa (3) beat Marists (ril). Lyttelton (6) beat 'Varsi+y (3). Albion won by default against North Canterbury, Merivale beat Albion by default. Scmi-Final. Wairewa (5) defeated Lyttelton (nil). Final. Old Boys (8) beat Wairewa (0). Clay ton and Young scored tries, Blackmore converting one. THIRD GRADE. Marists .3) beat Belfast (0). Star A beat Wairewa (3). The half-mile relay raco, open to all clubs whose members were competi at tho tournament, was won. by Old Boys. 'Varsity was second, and Linwood third. 'Varsity had the lead for the first round but Old Boys overtook them in the eecond, and won by three yards. • The winning team was: Tayiu. (2)* and Guthrie (2). '-.' V
