OTAGO WINTER SHOW.
SECOND: DAY.
(BT "OtTB STECI.VL RErO*TER.) DUNEDIN, June 3The weather changed to rain last evening, and to-day a cold southerly prevailed, accompanied by light falls of snow, giving the surrounding hills a fresh coating. The attendance on the opening day was not equal to that of last year, but this is explained-by the fact that the Show.was opened last year qn the.King's ..birthday. . That event was celebrated tp-day, and the attendance at the .Show was much larger. Tho trains arriving from North and. South during the day. brought in many more visitors.
' LIVE STOCK-EXHIBITS. • The show of fat stock, was,an excellent one, the coLection of fat catilo being better and more, even than is usually the case. THe sheep were, generally speaking, a. good • commercial lot, though a number of the pens were on the heavy 6ide. Three- very fino bullocks were shown in the any age class, and'Mr A. J. Keith', of Ashburton, won with the white.Shorthorn bred by Mr J- which was first at the Christchurch Show! "Second to him was a. massive - Hereford cross bullock shown by Mr, G. A. Graham (Berwick), and third was a better quality .Hereford cross, bullock, but lacking-the weight of the other. There was a ', good class of thretyyear-old .steers, ', in which the! prizes wero *won by Mr R. T. Kirk <Mosgiel), and R. Shannon (Berwick). Only one two-year-old steer was 6hown. The pens: of cows' and heifers were exceptionally good, and in these classes the principal prize-winners were Messrs Wm. Waddell (Waikaka Valley), J A. Graham (Berwick), and- R. T. - Kirk (Mosgiel). In most classes of fat sheep the judge had little difficulty in selecting the first and second, prize-winnprs, . bfit the next best pen required some consideration. The 6heep were mostly •of Romney and Border. Leicester blood, but there, were a number of-pens of Shropshire crosses. No merinos were shown. Mr. Jas. Ross (Palmerston) was first and second in halfbred wethors with well-grown sheep, and second.in halfbred ewes, being beaten in the latter class bvMr J. F. Herbert (Heriot). Mr Fred Bull (Waddington. was well represented with several very prime pens of Romney Shropshire cross wethers and hoggets, tho wethers being similar to those :with which he gained the Australasian record prices at the Grand National sale at Addington, last year. Ho was unbeaten in each bf the classes he showed in, being first and second in crossbred Down wethers of any ago, "first in crossbred Down wethers under 22 months, and first and second in crossbred Down hoggets; Mr Jas. Glassey-(Winchmore), was third in the first and latter of these classes. Mr Jas. Ross was again first and second in long-wool ,or crossbred long-wool wethers of any age,.with Border Leicester cross sheep, and in the class for younger sheep of the same crosses Mr D.
