CAPTAIN KFTTr. ALL'S STORY CHALLENGED. STATEMENTS RV *r*TF- AGENTS AND OFFICERS. THE LINER BLAMED. (Received Juno 2nd, 9.50 n.m.) MONTREAL, June 2, Mrs Andresen asserted that after tho Empress of Ireland sank she heard continuous screams all around. Captain Andresen sent out lifeboats which picked up everyone it was possible to rescue. She was positive that Captain Kendall did not assist any of .tho passengers. Instead, ho came aboard ami* lay down in the Storstad's ehartroom, whilo tho liner's crew came aboard, refusing to go to assist drowning passengers, stating that they wero too numerous.
Tho agents of tho Storstad state that the Empress of Ireland was seen off the port, bow of tho Storstad. tho green light being visible. The rules of navigation gave tho Storstad tho right of way. Tho Empress of Ireland's course was changed so as to pass safely. Tho fog then descended; and tho Storstad's engines were slowed and then stopped. Her course remained unaltered. Whistles were heard from tho Empress of Ireland and answered.
A green light was again seen through the fog, and tho engines of the Storstad wore sent astern. Way was nearly checked when tho ships collided. Tho Storstad tried to keep her prow in tho hole, but tho Empress of Ireland slewed away and disappeared.
Tho Storstad frequently whistled in order to locate tho liner, but failed, and was then manoeuvred close to tho Empress of Ireland. Boats wero lowered, and everything possible done to assist those on the liner.
Tho officors of tho Storstad confirm tho agents' statement. They declaro that ecoros of pooplo with lifebelts on were lying dead in tho sea, the freezing water having benumbed them.
