WAGES AND GENERAL CONDITIONS.
A NEW AGREEMENT
An. agreement between the Canterbury Licensed Victuallers' Association of Employers and the Canterbury Hotel and l.estaurant Employees' Union has been filed with the Cierk of Awards, at Christchureh. The agreement, which relates to hotel workers within the electoral districts of Christchureh Bast, Chrkt-i-urch North, and Christchureh aouth, came into force on May 11th, 1914, and continues until April 30tii, iyi7. Following are tne maxa clauses of the agreement:—

Waiters—Where three or more are employed: Head waiter _2 10s, secon-" £2, others £1 12s 6d. Two waiters: Head £2, second £1 12s 6d. One waitv only, £1 12s 6d. Waitresses skill b. paid not less tban £1 2s 6d. . Workers in tho Pantry—Males: First hand £l'los others £1 7s 6d. Female.' not less than £1 Is. Housemaids, 17s 6d; where housemaid assists in the din-ing-room or elsewhere she shall be paid not less than £1; laundress; £1 sa: linenmaids 17s 6d; barmen, £2 ss. Where porters are employed to do barmen's work, they shall be classed as bar porters, and be paid £1 15s per week. They may be employed during one after noon each week to relieve the barman -in his half-holiday, and for not more than one and a half hours at ono time, md not more than three hours in one ■ay to relieve tho barman for meals only, and they may-assist in the bai luring "rush hours" between 8 p.m and 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. l>ay Porters —Head porter £1 10s. others £1 7s 6d. Where only ono is employed, £1 7s 6d. Night porters, not ess than £1 10s; billiard-markers, _I !os. Buttons: Boys under 17 years 10s. >ver 17 and under 19 years 15s. Buttons shall not do porters' work. Casual Labour —Kitchen,' where four moro are usually employed: Chef £1 per day, others 10s for the first day, nd 7s 6d for every day thereafter Where less than four are employed. »Jhef (male) 15s per day. others 10s first ay, and is (i ior every day thereafter . cVef (female) 10s per day, others 7s 6d i day.■ Waiters 10s per day, waitresses 7s 6d :er day. Waiters* or waitresses en ;aged for one meal,shall be paid not less than ss. Pantrymen and pantrynaids and porters (night or day) not 6s- than 7s 6d. Barmen 10s per day md Is Od per hour for part of a day.
BOARD AND LODGING. Where boai-d is not provided to any worker, 15s per week shall be paid in addition to the above rates. Where iodging is not provided they shall receive an additional 7s 6d per . week. Provided that if an employer is willing and offers to provide suitable lodging, and the worker prefers to lodge else-* where, no allowance shall bo paid. Preference to unionists is provided by the award. Where no agreement in ivriting is made, twenty-four hours' •lotico shall be given by either pnirty. Employers shall be entitled to keep in nand two days' pay. Two days' pay may bo given in lieu of notice.
LYTTELTON AND SUBURBAN HOTELS. A separate agreement covers tbe conditions in respect of hotels within the boroughs of Lyttelton, New Brighton, Sumner, and Woolston, and tho Star Hotel, Addington, and the Papanui Hotel, Papanui. The hours of work, holidays, casual labour, and board and lodging clauses are the same as in the main agreement. I. is provided that in computing the number of persons employed, casual workers shall not be reckoned, and where an" employer himself does the work of any worker affected by the agreement, he shall be counted as an employee. The rates of wages are the same ns in the main agreement, except that female.cooks, where only one hand is employed, receive £1 7s 6d instead of £1 10s, and that housemaidwaitress receive £1 Is instead of £1. A porter employed in the bar more than twenty-five hours in any week, and on any other than the hours set forth in tho time-table, shall be classed as a barman. Men employed as general hands shall be paid not less than £1 7s fid per week. This agreement comes into force on .Tunei *.""t,n, .19*4, and continues until April 30th, 1917.
