Mr and Mrs M. Payne (Christehurch) intend to devote twelve months to-a pleasure tour of Great Britain and the Continent.
Mrs Allan Hopkins (Christchureh) and _ho Misses. Hopkins ant._rp_±_, spending five or six months in England, and seeing a good deal by motor-car.
Mr W. J. Minty (Christchureh)'has been staying in his native city, Bristol, and motoring through many counties adjacent. He will leave shortly for Scotland and Ireland.
Miss B. K. McCormack (Christchurch) will return, to New Zealand at ciie beginning of • the year. » _he is ieaving London shortly ror Ireland and --Scotland.
News, comes from Scotland of the death of Mr' McKay,' who came' to _urope a. fpw- months ago for his health. His niece was with him at tne end, also Miss Winifred nardy, of New Zealand, who travelled with him as his nurse. Mr McKay was in Koss-shire when he died.
Mr Hector ' Maclean,, M.A., ! M.Sc (Otago), and Mr George T. Brownj M.A. (Otago) have just completed their course of four years'. 6-ndy at the Qollego of the United Free _ Church of Scotland at-Glasgow. Mr' David C. Herron, M.A., has, completed three years at the College.
Sir Joshua and Lady. Williams have arrived in England, and are staying for tho present at Dorchester terrace, Bayswater. • They left their steamer at Naples, and few days'in llomo, and also in Paris, en.route to London, arriving here on-the 16th irist.' In Home Sir Joshua was slightly -indisposed for some days, .but he is .now entirely recovered. * .-
The Hon. D. Buddo, M.P., with Mrs and' Miss Buddo,'have been in-London for some weeks. They, will leave shortly for Yorkshire, Scotland, and Ireldnd, and expect to return home via Canada, leaving here "early in Jane/ Mr Buddo has dovoted much of J_is time in' London, to investigating-the- landing, storage, and marketing of New Zealand produco here, but he has also entered into the usual social round. He. is full of admiration of the municipal government of London, particularly in respect to the control of traffic. " '
•At a meeting, of* the .-London Astronomical Society, it was resolved,' on the motion of Mr J. H. Worthington, *M.A.,.F.R.A:5., seconded _y-Mr W. H. Steavenson, F.R.A.S., £o .issue tho follpwing protest:—"The _x>ndon Astronomical. Society feels 'that the-failure of official observatories to use Professor' •Bickerton's 'Generalisation—the* 'Impact Theory of Cosmic Evhlution*—as a working, hypothesis,..and also that"this efficient" correlation " is' not taught in our seats of learning, has seriously retarded scientific, progress."
, The enthronement of- the first Bit-hop of Chelmsford—tlie Rev.*j; E., WattsDitchfield —took placed yesterday,- and was made tho occasion,of. a,memorable gathering at' the county . town -pf-. .Essex. Thero was a" civic' procession from the Shire Hall to the Cathedral, in which the Mayors of nine districts .took part. . Following was' a procession of diocesan, clergy, close on * five' hundred in number, headed- Dy the precentor and choir. of.', the. Cathedral ' Church. Then came the Bishop's procession. The ceremony of enthronement was performed by the "Bishop of Dover. Later a-reception was held by the Mayor and Mayoress, and the Bishop received addresses of welcome from the county and the borough. f .
