A first offender for drunkenness, who was arrested on tho railway station, was fined 10s, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, x.nother first offender for drunkenness was fined os, with the alternative of tjventy-four hours' imprisonment. REMANDED. John Finla w , alias John Fleming, was charged with drunkenness on Sunday. Sub-Inspector McKinnon: He's in a very bad way. He's been drinking methylated spirits. The Magistrate: I'll give him a week to get over it. Accused was remanded for seven days. ALLEGED THEFT. Charles Nelson (Mr M. Donnelly), charged with the theft of two greyhounds, valued at £10, the property of William Archer, was remanded until Friday morning. Bail was allowed, accused in £50, and one surety of £50. A POLITICAL ARGUMENT. Sydney Workman was charged with assaulting Walter Johnston on Saturday night. Sub-Inspector McKinnon said that the accused had been looking. for trouble, xilong with two companions, he had accosted Johnston, and said, "You're one of tho Masse*/ crowd!" Johnston replied that he had not the pleasure of accused's acquaintance, and the latter had retaliated with a blow which knocked Johnston over. '

Constable Hislop, who witnessed the assault, said that Johnston and his friends had been engaged in a political argument. The assault was quite unprovoked. The Magistrate: These assaults in the street are very annoying indeed. It s no excuse for one man to hit another, simply because they're having an argument, political or otherwise.
