OPERA HOUSE.
A new and very entertaining .programme* was submitted by ihe i'uii-r-Uronnan Company at the.Opera House last night. The star turn was that provided.y JosephineGassman and Her , piccaninnies. The youngsters were remarkably clever, and rt&elred prolonged applause for their singing aud dancing. .The feature of tho turn was the appearance at tho end of a littio coloured toddler just aole to talk, who essayed two songs, "Down tho _\li_s:s~ sippf- and "Yon Made Mc Love You." It was a quaint pertormance, and tho large audienco roared with delight, At the close of the turn the leader of the little band thanked the patrons hearv ' ily for the splendid reception accorded them. Another popular ■ Jn>« was that jut on by Dennis Carney, who, as n comedian, ranks high, and whose new j.ougs last night made a decided score. Mr Carlton Max (ventriloquist) gave another successful demonstration of his art. He works with a splendid-dummy, and puts into the turn a vast amount of humour. "Jolly Marie," a lady performer,' sarig an old favourite, "Jolly Good Company," and responded satisfactorily to encores. Misses Knowles and Lee, who established: thomselves as popular favourites when There before, made a welcome reappearance, and presented two little musical scenas, also the song "Shine, Lfttfe, Glow-wm-ra," which possesses a very pretty refrain. Phillips and Merritt printed 8 com'<>dy scene, and also performed the tango, and good turns were provided by P»ay Lawrence, Herr Ernst Franz, and Miss Sophia Lee.
To-night the special attraction will be,the first oF a series of two tango competitions conducted by Mr Phillips. There are a large number of entries, and the competitors, all local people, have been tnost assiduous of lato in mastering the intricacies of the dance.
