A PREVIOUS MISHAP.
(si-ecial ro •*-rn_ vress.". DUNEDIN, June J. A. Dunedin gentleman and his Avifc shared, with close on 1500 other passengers, a memorable experience on the Empress of Ireland early in October, ]90_, when crossing from Liverpool to Quebec. ''When rounding Father Point," the gentleman says, '"the splendid vessel struck a rock and ripped her bottom on tho port side. Sho immediately heeled over to a dangerous degree: Signals went up for assistance from Rimouski, and soon tho Customs boat nnd another vessel arrived on the scene. It was found, however, that by opening thc starboard tanks sho could bo put on an even keel. We wero all instructed to prepare our luggage for going ashore, but the order was countermanded a little later, it being thought that the ship could mako Quebec without danger. We stayed all night on board, and got into port tho following day."
Mr O. W. Reid, of Christchurch, who recently left New Zealand, travelled in tho Tahiti to San Francisco, and probably crossed the Atlantic in a steamer from Now York.
