CORONER'S INVESTIGATION.
STARTLING EVIDENCE. . CAPTAIN KENDAILJS STORY. (Received Juno Ist, 1 a.m.) QUEBEC. May 31. The Coroner has opened his investigation at Rimouski. Captain Kendall, who had recovered ' . from tho effects of his immersion but was very depressed, was tho chief witness. * Ho stated he saw the Storstad two ." miles off before tho fog obliterated her. Ho stopped his ship and whistled three short blasts. The Storstad replied with one long blast. Somo minutes later the Storstad loomed tip in the fog. Tho ships were a length away. He megaphoned to her to backwater, and ho himself went full speed ahead, hoping to avert a collision. Afterwards h« asked the Storstad to continue at full speed ahead in the hopo that she would "*" fill up tho holo in the Empress of Ireland's side, but tho Storstad backed away and failed to beach the Empress of Ireland. The engines becanio useless in three minutes, and the Ernpres* of Ireland fijled rapidly when the Storstad backed away. Captain Kendall added that ho sa\» " - ... the fog bank approaching in plenty of time to prepai'o for it. and ho took every precaution humanly possihlo. Tho . behaviour of tho officers and crew was beyond praise.
