A POPULAR SHIP.
The insurances of the Empress of Ireland were £400,000 on the hull, and £100,000 on the cargo. She was one of the most popular ships in the Canadian trade. Showas doublo-bottomed, divided transversely into ten bulkheads, so that at normal draught any two adjoining compartments might be flooded without endangering her safety. She carried sixteen lifeboats, with seating for 764 people, and twenty Englohardt collapsible boats, seating 920, and four Berthon boats seating 170, also 2212 adult and 150 children's life-jackets.
