VISIT TO AMBERLEY.
LOCAL REQUIREMENTS
After his speech at Hawarden, the Hon! A. L.. Herdman went to Amberley by the afternoon train. Before his evening meeting he received a deputation of Amberley residents (introduced by Mr ,G. D. Greenwood), who wished for another telephone wire to Christchurch. It was pointed out that Amberley had one wire with 67 subscribers, Rangiora three with 62, and Kaiapoi two with 37.
Mr Herdman said he did not havo any jurisdiction over the matter, but he would be pleased to tell tho Post-master-General about the subject when he saw him.
The deputation also asked the Minister to consider the question of a new Courthouse for the town. Referring again to postal matters, Mr Rhodes pointed out some anomalies in the carriage of mails. It took, for instance, two days for a letter to go from Amberley to Waipara, the mails having to go to Christchurch first. The Minister said that tho arrangements seemed peculiar, and promised to refer the matter to the PostmasterGeneral i
Mr Nicholls said there was a 6iding needed at Glasnovin. Representations had been made to the Railway Department, and an official had been sent out some eighteen months ago to enquire into the matter, but nothing else had been done. A good many settlers would be benefited by tho siding.
Mr Herdman said he would see that representations were made to the Manager of Railways.
