A BRUTAL ASSAULT.

(FBBB3 ASSOCIATION" TELEGBAM.) AUCKLAND, May 29. A girl named Gwendoline Leather, while returning home at about t>ix o'clock last night, was assaulted by a man, who hit her on the head with an iron spanner. She fell, and her assailant grasped her throat.

She screamed, aud the man snatched her handbag and bolted. Tne girl has two scalp wounds, which required twelve stitches, and alio bears marks on her neck. The spanner is in possession of the Dolke. but there is no further clue.
