GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS.

Friday Evening,
The local grain market is practically at a standstill, there being so littlo doing in -wheat and oats, and nothing in barley. Offerings of grain by growers are very limited, and except for wheat there is little demand. The potato market is dull as supplies now in merchants' bands are sufficient for requirements. Some buyers are only offering £2 los. but there are few sellers at this figure, those who have not yet pitted their crops asking £3 at country stations. Buyers axe, howover, not anxious to do business even at the lower figure. The northern market is supplied and few fresh orders are .coming to hand. _ Last week's Southland gram returns show that np to date 224,017 sacks have been carried on tho railway this season as against 238,814 last year to a similar date, or 14,794 sacks short. Tl;a early harvest this season cave the early returns an advantage, but this has now been lost, and gradually last year s returns will increase their advantage compared with this years totals.
