THE MAN WHO SAVED THE SITUATION.
(riUJSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
WANGANUI, May 29.
I Among the passengers by the Main Trunk express, which met with disaster on Wednesday morning, was Mr Fred. Cunningham, Wiseman and Sons'
Wanganui representative.
Seen by a "Herald" representative to-day, he said tho passengers' stories told to Auckland Pressmen had not in all cases given credit to the Tight persons, though this was not to be wondered at, considering the darkness and confusion. The man deserving of credit for preventing tho explosion of gas was Mr James Borrie, a farmer at tt'ainiaie, in South Canterbury, for while others smashed the windows to let tho gas out this was done at Borrso's instance, aud but for him possibly no one eke would havo thought of it. Most of tho passengers wero unablo to sco in the darkness, and the room for workiing being limited they returned to their seats to wait until"the daylight came. But the few who were ablo bo do good stuck like Trojans to the work of rescue. Tho only ono of thorn ho knew was Arthur R. Johnson, a Rutland Hotel (Wanganui) employee, who, covered with grime and blood, worked heroically getting tho injured out. In addition to the Maori nurse already mentioned, there was also a European nurse whoso name he did not know, and both these women were untiring in their attention to the iuiured. Regarding the delay in sending. on the engine of the goods train for help, Mr Cunningham said it was due to tho tact that the tablet which had been picked up by the express engine could not be found, and without it the train officials could not go on. It was finally found about eight o'clock. Then an engine was despatched.
