BARTLETT v. LOWE
LOWE THE WINNER.
(PRXSS ASBOCIATIOK TKUMJRAM.) GISBORNE, May 28.
The boxing contest between Bartlett (challenger), of Christchurch, and Lowe (holder), of Gisborne, for the professional heavy-weight championship' of New Zealand and a purse of £75, attracted an audience that filled the Opera House to overcrowding. Lowe weighed list 10lb, and Bartlett 12et 21b. It proved to be one of the moet strenuous heavy-we"ight contests ever held in thie district, although really heavy effective hitting vns not veTy prevalent. By common consent Bartlett must be given credit for showing more aggressiveness against Lowe than any previous opponent. He did best, however, only at close quarters. In the seventh round Lowe was struck down by an unexpected back-hand blow, but after remaining down as long as possible, he returned to the fray little the worse. The" contest ended at the cloee of the eleventh round, aa a result of Bartlett giving up on account of an injured wrist, which had been troubling him since the fifth round.
(SPECIAL TO "THE PRKSS.") GISBORNE, May 28. Lowe's euperior stamina told in -.the 11th round, and Bartlett took a number of heary blows that weakened him considerably. He hit Lowe oace with a right ewing, but he was at the receiver's end moet of the time. At tho conclusion of tho round Bartlett, who had hurt hie hande badly in tho fifth round, decided to retire, and the towel wae accordingly "skied." _ _ . In a- conversation alter the contest, Lowe stated that it was the hardest fight be had had, but he did not feel distressed. Bartlett eaid he was satisfied that he wad done, and be bebeved in giving in to a better man. The result wae received enthusiastically.
