UNION SUNDAY MEETINGS.
CAN A MEMBER BE PINED FOR > NON-ATTENDANCE?
(PBEBS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) - DUNEDIN, May 28. An interesting test case was brought before Mr "Widdowson, S.M., this morning to determine whether an industrial" union had the right to inflict fines on members for non-attendance at union meetings held on Sunday. The parties to the dispute were tho Otago Tramway Union and Duncan Ingle, a member of the union. The claim was for 3s only, the action being friendly. Mr Hanlon, for defendant, explained that there was no direct legal authority on the* point, tut ho submitted that if a Court of Justice could not fine a man for non-attendance at the_ Court on a Sunday, an industrial union had no power to penalise a member for nonattendance at a meeting on Sunday. Judgment was reserved.
