In tl:e St. - Paul's school hall laat cvemnp; a Jecturo in aid of the funds for building a new hall at Liuwood for tho purpose of holding Presbyterian services was delivered by the Roy. 11. J. Lewis, of New Plymouth. The lecturer- took as his subject the life story 'if F. G Charrington, philanthropist. Mr Charrington, ho explained, was a brewer with an income of £1000 a week, which hs rclinauished for hie principles, and- commence.! philanthropic work in London. He carried n a very large mission in one of tho mont ttickly populated parts with greut success. klr Charrington had published an account of "lis life and work, entitled "The Greet Acceptance." Hβ was tho first man. to make an effort to elevate -the slum dwellers in tbo h Zaat End of London. He built an.assembly hall which seated £5000, the largest in fjondou, and also a homo for inebriates at 050 a,,. in/Essex. Songa, recitatione, pianoforte duots, β-jid action eongs'were contributed by Dulcie Hull, StellaOaborno, Marjoric Lucas, Violet Quartermain, Evelyn Lucas, Smith sisters, Koy Fraier, and Mr Keale. Prizes were preeented to Evolyn Johnston, Thelma Buckler, and George Cotteii for attondanco and good behaviour. Refreshments wero handed round, aad vote* of thanks accorded the chairman and perforrneTs.

The anniversary 6crricea in connexion with the Sydenham Methodist Church were continued on "Wednesday evening, when a tea meeting and concert was held. There was n. very large attendance of members and friends. Tho ladies .of the Church kindly provided refreshments, which were done full justice to by all present. Tho Eev. A. X. Scotter presided at the α-iler meeting and concert, and read Ilic annual report and bal-ance-sheet, which showed that, the church was in a good position financially and numerically. The various class meetings, endeavour societies, and preachincj services wera all in ji uucjant condition, while the Sunday school, LaHicj , Guild, and choir were all doing good work. Sister Florence (tho new deaconess) bed begun work in the district, and it was anticipated that she would prove a worthy successor to Sister Lilian, who had to ror.ign on account of impaired health. Mr J. Peek having resigned the position of secretary 01" the Trutf, and Mr G. Keeae that of treafciircr (after twenty-five' years' service), lit W. I>obbs was appointed to Hie combine.! offices. Vocal and instrumental items wore contributed by Missee Keppel, Kay (3>. Eckroyd, Messrs J. Olds, VT. J. Sprat}, W. J. Bui3t?y, and the choir. Votes of thanks were accorded tho ladies for pioriding refresh nienta and the contributors to tho programme.

Hancock, and A. l>. Jlassa!, representing the Iteform, Liberal, Social Democrat, and Independent Liberal ititcreste respectively, wero allowed fifteen minutes each to dec-iare their viuwe. At question time the wit and ingenuity of the candidates tvere sorely taxed, hut on the whole they camo through tho ordeal without much loss of prestijo. The chairman (ths Bey. H. E. Bolihouse) announced tbo return of Mr Hancock.
- Tho Star of Linwood Lodge. 1.0.0. F., held its quarterly meeting on Tuesday tight, Brother J. Ward, K.G., presiding ovor a largo attendance of uienabere. First nominations for officers were received. A vote of thnnks wae accorded to the visiting brethren, to which Brother Hitchins, P.G., Star of Sydenham, ajid Brother A. Munn3, P.G., New Brighton, roplied. After tho closing of the Lodge, huinoroua readings were given hy several members, which grsaily added to tho enjoyment of the evening.
The members of the "Ramblers' , Orchestra, paid a visit to the Prison Gate Mrigndo Home on Tuesday evening, when n programme consisting of instrumental selections by tho orchestra, violin 60103 by Messrs C. Brown and W. Xicboll.% cornet solo by Mr D. Blijjh, and a duct fer flute and clarinet by Moaers Dobbio and Withers, was given. Tho items wero jjreatly appreciated by the staff and inmates. A .vote of thanks ■was proposed by Staff-Captain Barnes, and carried by acclamation. A very pleasant evening was terminated by the orchestra playing tho National Anthem.
At a special meeting of the KedcKfls School Committee, held on Tuesday tvening, tho head teacher reported that the Education Board's garden expert (Mr Malcolm) had interviewed him and mud? certain euggestions for the improvement of tho grounds. He wi«ht?d to know what the committee considered required doing, tho cost, and wliat they vrero prepared to contribute. Mr Hines said bo thought that if the plot vraa fenced in with rnbberoid. and about twenty loads of good soil supplied, thpt wou!d bo (ill that tvas necessary. He estimated that the cost would be £10.—It was decided to make application to tho Board for a grant towarde the cost. The report was received, and considered very Tho schoolmaster and mistrcfs (Mr Hawke and Mib* Itankin) were consrr*tul»tcd accordingly. The Board wrote advising the committee, that the Department imd M'tliomed a prsnt for additions to the RccHifo School, and that plans would be prepared and tenders called for the work as soon as possible.
