THE SAN FRANCISCO EXPOSITION.
ADDRESS BY MR "MAURICE
O'BRIEN.
. A meeting of those interested in the Panama Exposition was held yesterday afternoon, when Mr Maurice O'Brien, secretary of the New Zealand Executive Committee, gave a short address. He said that the Exposition, a huge concern covering 635 acres, was laidl out on entirely new lines and would cost 50,000,000 dollars before the gates were opened. The previous method had been to ihave national courts, but in this case each class of manufacture and produce would have a palace of ite own, and New Zealand wool would be displayed beside that of Australia, China, and South America, thus materially assisting the work of adjudication.
The portion, allocated to New Zealand -was two-thirds of an acre, and the ground would be planted with indigesous trees of this country. The first shipment went forward last Friday, and! the next would go at the end of June. All New Zealand game.would be shown in the pavilion erected by the Government, trhich would also be the headquarters of the New Zealand staff. The arrangements were in the hands of Mr Edmond Clifton, the New Zealand Commissioner at San Francisco, and trade representative. for North America. Excellent work was being done in the Itominion by the recently formed committee, who" were now busy collecting specimens from tie producers and merchants. In - order to encourage New Zealand manufacturers the.Government were offering every assistance, carrying free by rail in both directions, and the Union Steam Ship Company offered the same conditions by boat.
