(FROM A CORRESPONDENT.)

WELLINGTON, May 26,

Aroused by the Rev. Canon Garland's reference to heathen teaching finding a place in the "School Journal," further pulpit references wero made on the subject on Sunday, including that of the Rev. G. S. Cook (Methodist minister), who said he had been much impressed by two things during the controversy. The best of English literature was so saturated with Scriptural and Christian allusions it was impossible, without mutilation, to keep some of these out of the "School Journal." It was necessary for an English-speaking child, therefore, to have a knowledge of Scripture fully to understand English literature. Apparently, the articles on Mahomet,. Confucius, or other heathen gods had a right of way in .tho journals, while direct reference to Jesus Christ or the Bible had no such right. '

The Wellington Education Board has resolved that the -'School Journal," during the coming year, shall bo the official reader. Parents, while welcoming the lessened expense, the Journal being supplied gratis by the State, are naturally inclined to tako a keener interest in tho matter published as well as that at present barred.

A meeting under tho auspices of the Bible-in-Scbools League was held at New Brighton last evening. There was a very large attendance, over which the Rev. Mr' McKenzie (Methodist) presided*. Addresses in support of the League's platform were given by the Very Rev. Dean Carrington, the Revs. Williams (Methodist), Mackenzie (Presbyterian), and H. H. Mathias (Anglican), and a motion in favour of the_ granting of a referendum on the subject was carried unanimously. -
