Nelson- was, f otind. dead in bed in, his whare at Hamua tc-day.. He was an old idontity, and lived alone. DUNEDIN. May 26. William James Gilmore, aged 54 years, who was travelling on the steamer Maitai along with his wife and four children, died at, Port -Chalmers just after tho vessel's arrival from the Bluff. Gilmore was caretaker of the Government -Buildings at Invarcargill, and as ho was suffering from chest troublo, his transfer to tho milder climate of Wellington had been arranged. He was on his way there. A fit of coughing this morning brought on hemorrhage, and ho died in his wife's arras. ■ ' " ' AUCKLAND, May 26. The bursting of one of the retorts used for the refining, of sulphur at White Island on tho 18th- inst., resulted in the death of a certificated fireman named John Williams. Oeceased, who was married, received'severe burns and injuries, dying on'the following day owing .to heavy weather. News of the accident did not reach Auckland earlier. The retorts at tho island have been closed temporarily to enable the cause of the .accident to be investigated. WELLINGTON, May 26. A young man named James Forbes lost his life through drowning' in "the Hutt river, at Silverstream. He and a youth named Collins were crossing the iiver in a trap, when the horse became native. Forbes-jumped out to go to the horse's head, and apparently got out ef bis depth. "When he .was last spen by Collins he was up to his waist inwnipr.
