For some years past it has been the custom of the Christchurch Savage Club to celebrate, Empire Day by inviting all the officers and Tw«-ooiT>»»\v-<.-'»>^.. cd officers of the Canterbury Military Forces to v "Korero.' On :uoih>;i„v cveiling about 200 guests assembled in the Chamber of Commerce and helped about 150 of the regular members to do' full justice to the occasion. :

Hobbs to carry out the duties incumbent on him in a manner that would: uphold tho worthy' traditions of the tribe.' . ' The proceedings opened with'a selection by the .orchestra of old English airs, and then the toast of-the "Army and Navy" "was proposed by. the chairman. This toast-was responded to by Savage his Honour Mr Justice Denniston, who replied on behalf of the Navy, and Colonel Smith on behalf of the Army' and Territorials. Colonel Smith, in the course of his remarks, paid a glowing tribute to"the cheerful "way in which the Territorials at the Kowai camp had carried out their duties in the face of most an'nalling weather conditions."
