NEW BRIGHTON.
A meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council w,is held last uight. Present:—Tho Mayor (Mr C. H. Winny). Crs. J. Aiitger. A. W. Owles, A C. Witbell, F. Kibblewhite, ■ (•». \V. Staniland, C Israelson, O. V. Bergh and J. Ashley.
Correspondence was received from tho IMstrict Health Officer, Christchurch, in reference to the installation of yeptic tanks in the borough, pointing out how necessary it was that strict supervision should be exercised. —Referred to the Sanitary Committee.
A letter was received from the secretary of'the Lyttelton Harbour Board asking whether the Council were prepared to take over tho wharf on tho east side of the river at a" price to be mutually agreed upon; and stating that iv view of the fact that the adjacent foreshores had been vested in tho Council, the Harbour Board, in pursuance of its policy regarding all outlying jetties of a non-revenue producing character, did not feel called upon. to continue the up-keep of the w-harf, and that failing the Council taking it over, as proposed, the wharf would bo closod for traffic. —Referred to the Works Committee.
Mr E. Langford wrote drawing the attention of the Council to tho unsatisfactory state of .the side-channelling on tho Kouth side of Sea.Viow read.— Referred .-to the Works-Committee.
Messrs, "Williams, Hunt and Co. wrote, regarding the Local Bodies Loan Act, 1913, stating that if it was tho intention of the Council to raise money by way of loan the, firm could probably arrange to float the loan on tho London market on as favourable terms as it "was possiblo to secure.— Received. , •
T>r. W; ; E. Stovens -wrote drawing the ' attention, 0f../the. Council jfco the necessity of more, care being exercised in'tho method of laying metal on the roads ox the Borough, as the present means used., owing to the action of motor traffic, mado it dangerous for horses.—-Referred to the Works Committee. • ■■> ■ .
The Finance Committee reported for the period ending May 20th as follows:—■'Rfce.ipts £89 11s Bd,: expenditure,' 13s 3d. dehit- .it. bank £295 9a 4d ; deposits. £1114 3s 6d. Accounts amounting to £63 6s were recommended for;-payment.
Tho Finance Committee recommended that tho Town Clerk be instructed to notify ratepayers through the medium of the morning newspapers that 10 percent, would he added to all rates unpaid after June 26t>h, 1914. Buildius 'permits, totalling; £1255, hi\A been granted.

The "Works Committee rocommended that the property owners in Tonks street be -written to informing them that the Council fully realised the rositioil of thia. .rftect, and would consider, the quest'on. of pjving' relief to certain holders if the owners would assist ia covering their sections with Marram gra&s. Tho Committee had decided to purchase a quantity of oxide of iron for killing grass growing on the edges of the side-channels. It was decided to reset the scoria in Herring Bay road. It was decided that extra teams be eraplos'cd in the finishing of work in Park road, Pratt street and Rawion street. A recommendation was made that £25 be spent in planting Marram grass on Bushill road and on tlie seaside of the Esplanade. The report was adopted, all urgent
