Tho Works Committee reported toy tho City Council last night as follows: — Tho following quantities of metal havo been delivered einCo April Ist:— > Central Ward, 2528 cubic yards; Byd- - enham Ward. 1090* cubic yards; St. Albans Ward, 570 cubic yards; Linwood Ward, 246 cubic yards. COST O* , STRICT-WIDENING. . Tho committee recommended that c romit bo forwarded to tho Municipal - . C6nferenw> wtth a view to having sec- - tkm 33 of thd Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1910, amended so at ■ to make it effective in the case of i borough widening streets or carrying out any public work which, would increase tho value of property in tho particular neighbourhood, and that too owners of such property 6o affected should bo compelled to contribute by- " special rate or otherwise a. fair chare of the cost of such work. Tho clauSft was Adopted. OPAWA ROA». Regarding Opawa road, the committco reported that tho Heatbeoto County Council had asked for a fcpoeial grant towards tho maintenance of tho road. Tho reason for the rofjiifet was that tho City Council had entered into contract** for* tho supply of metal from the Glenmoro Brick Company and Mr Garland, tho metal from the quarries being cart- . cd over Opawa. road. As tho Council - at present paid,£loo per annum towards tho maintenance of the road, the committee could not recommend the ■ Council to grant tho request, especially in view of tho fact that Tinder the County Council's heavy traffic by-laws ' each cart carrvinsr met&l we* subject to a tax of £3 10s per annum. Tho clause was referred back to the committee. RIVER ROAD FOOTPATH. The cominitteo recommended that a footpath bo formed round River road from Wilson's road to Tennyson street.To carry out tho work it would be necessary to aequiro a strip of land from Mr W. Butler, and the estimated cost of acquiring the land, forming the footpath, and laying a concrete channel ■ was £427 10s. • Cr. SorcnsP.n moved that the claoso relating to tho footpath along the River road should be held over until tho estimates came up for. consideration. A road-widening scheme had jusW been rejected by tho ratepayers. Cr. Taylor, who aoconded tho motion, said that if the ratonayers refused loans for capital expenditure- the Council, should not defray euch cost oat of rates.

Cr. Millar urged that the work should his dono; it was one of. prime necessity. Cr. Hunter said tho Council had decided to undertake the work long before the loan poll was submitted.
