IPSWICH BY-ELECTION
COMMENT ON THE RESULT. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright} (Received midnight.) LONDON, May 26. Tho "Daily Chronicle" says that the Ipswich by-election result i& an honest defeat for the Government, and closely reproduces the details of tho defeat at Reading, the only other gonuino defeat during the past twelve months. Both fights turned almost entirely on tho Insurance Act, the earner of uitder £i a week finding tho payment of fourpence excessive. Everyone will sympathise with Mr Mastertnan, who has had a run of bad luck, but it should be borne in mind that the bad feature of the Act remained nnremedied. Thoro was poetic justice in a "Minister of Insurance" paying such a penalty. According to some Liberals, Ipswich Labour supporters were incensed at Mr Asquith and Mr Lloyd George endorsing Mr Houston's eandidaturo for Derby, hence many voted for Mr Gansoni.
