Tho Farmers' Union has called a public meeting for Saturday eveniug nest, when the matter of public saleyards for Waiau will bo fully gone into and a decision arrived at.
The committee of the llailway League met on Saturday evening, Mr W. Gale presiding. Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., intimated that he considered the first sod should bo turned at tho Culverden end, as the work would commence there, and the Hon. Mr Fraser had indicated to him that as his time was very fully taken Tip the ceremony would have to be conducted so as to obviate any unnecessary loss of time. Aj> no reply Lad been received from the Minister to the League's letter. it was decided to send a copy of the letter to Mr Forbes, intimating that tho matter would be left entirely to the Minister and himself to arrange. Mr and Mrs A. J. Sunckell provided afternoon tea for the Cheviot and Waiau football teams on Saturday also for the spectators. The visiting team was entertained by the local club at dinner.
The road leading up from the Wafan townshio to the Lower Annan settlement was, during the summer mouths, re-graded.- but nomotal spread. The .recent bad weather, combiuod with grain carting, has put it in an indescribably boggy state, and the settlers are petitioning the County Council for release from their plight. ,It is difficult, however, to see what can be done until fine -weather sets. in.
The Brackenfield Hunt Club held a run over Mr Hugh Crampton's and adjacent properties on Lyndon No. 2 on Saturday. A bright, crisn day enabled a croodly muster to enjoy an excellent day's sport.
